How to unfollow someone on X

The short answer

Open their profile and click the Following button; it turns red and reads Unfollow. You can also unfollow from your own Following list, or from the three dots on any of their posts without leaving your timeline. X sends no notification either way.

Step by step

  1. 1

From their profile: click the Following button.

It sits to the right of their name and changes to Unfollow when you hover.

  2. 2

From your list: profile, then Following, then the button beside their name.

Useful when you know you want someone gone but not who exactly.

  3. 3

From a post: click the three dots, then Unfollow.

Fastest when something in your timeline prompted it.

  4. 4

On mobile: the same three routes, with a confirmation sheet.

Tap Following on the profile and confirm.

Worth knowing

Nobody is told. No notification, no email, nothing in their activity. They would have to visit your profile or notice you had gone quiet in their timeline.

If the problem is your timeline rather than the person, mute is the better tool. It keeps the follow, is completely invisible, and undoes without awkwardness.

Questions

Does someone know when you unfollow them on X?

Not unless they check. X sends nothing.

What is the difference between unfollowing, muting and blocking?

Unfollowing removes them from your timeline and is invisible. Muting does the same but keeps the follow, also invisible. Blocking cuts access both ways and they can see it.

Can I unfollow lots of people at once?

Not in X itself, which has no bulk option. A browser extension can select and unfollow a filtered set at a pace that stays inside the daily limits.
