How to remove a follower on X without blocking them
X lets you drop a follower quietly, no block and no notification. Here is where the option lives and when to use it.
Open your Followers list, click the three dots beside someone, and choose Remove this follower. They stop following you. They are not blocked, they are not told, and they can follow you again if they notice.
Most people still block and unblock to do this, which is cruder and tells them exactly what happened. The proper option has been there for a while.
Where it is
- Open your profile and click Followers.
- Find the account.
- Click the three dots beside them and choose Remove this follower.
Remove, block or mute
- Remove a follower when you would rather they were not in your audience but you do not need a wall. Quiet, and they can undo it.
- Block when you want them unable to see or contact you. They get a clear message when they visit your profile.
- Mute when the problem is your timeline rather than their access. They keep following and never know.
Why anyone does this in bulk
Bots, mostly. An account that catches a wave of engagement picks up hundreds of empty followers: no posts, no picture, eight digits on the end of the handle. They inflate your follower count while doing nothing, and they make your engagement rate look worse than it is, because the denominator grew and the numerator did not.
If your numbers matter to you, or you are showing them to a sponsor, clearing those out is worth an afternoon.
Doing it in bulk
X has no bulk version, the same way it has no bulk unfollow. The Futurepost extension adds one: it loads your follower list, filters by inactivity, follower count and verification, and removes the selection at a paced rate.
Removing followers appears to draw on a looser allowance than following does, so it does not eat the daily budget described in the unfollow limits. It still gets paced.
One question before you start
Removing a follower drops your follower count, and unlike unfollowing, the person on the other end may genuinely have wanted to read you. Bots are easy. Real accounts that are simply quiet are not, and muting is almost always the better answer there.
Ask whether you want them out of your audience or out of your attention. Only the first calls for removal.
